Merck & C0 (MRK) – B56DS36

October 16, 2023

To qualify for ISA inclusion, a share has to be officially listed on a recognised stock exchange (see ISA Guidance https://www.gov.uk/guidance/stocks-and-shares-investments-for-isa-managers#shareinv) or, from 5 August 2013, admitted to trading on a recognised stock exchange in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the UK.

The tricky bit with this stock is whether this share is ‘listed’ or simply ‘traded’ on the NYSE . The company website (link below) says the shares are traded on the NYSE and not listed. if the shares are only being ‘traded’ on the NYSE they won’t qualify for ISA inclusion as it fails the 5 August 2013, admitted to trading on a recognised stock exchange in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the UK. If they are listed on the NYSE, they will qualify for ISA inclusion.

I’ve seen other companies use different terminology when the shares were actually ‘listed’. I’m not sure I’ve seen a scenario before with the NYSE where shares are simply ‘traded’ without being ‘listed’, that’s the tricky bit, and without any concrete evidence I am unable to provide a definitive answer on this share.
