Transforming Financial Wellbeing in the Community
By Lindsey Reed, Money Management Trainer at TISA

Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May 2025) invites us to reflect on what helps us feel grounded, safe, and resilient — and this year’s theme, Community, could not be more timely or relevant.
At its best, community gives us more than just a place to belong. It offers a sense of purpose, connection, and the confidence to weather life’s storms, financial or otherwise. It’s in our community that we can feel seen, supported, and reminded that we are not alone.
But what happens when money worries creep in?
The truth is, financial stress can silently pull people away from their communities. When someone is worried about money, unable to pay bills, coping with debt, or fearing an unexpected expense, shame and anxiety can lead to isolation.
That’s not just a personal problem. It’s a community one. And it’s one we can change.
At TISA, our ambition is to improve the financial wellbeing of all UK consumers by working collectively with the financial services industry to deliver solutions that uplift people, organisations, and society as a whole.
We know many of our members are deeply committed to supporting their local communities. And with good reason. Nearly 1 in 4 people in the UK have less than £100 in savings, making them highly vulnerable to financial shocks. These pressures are not only affecting individual wellbeing but costing employers significantly — with an estimated £10.3 billion in lost productivity in 2023 alone due to financial stress.
These are not just statistics. They are real people. Neighbours, employees, friends, and clients — often suffering in silence.
So what can we do?
Empower people with skills for life
What if we could make practical money skills as commonplace in our communities as first aid training?
Through our Train the Trainer programme, we equip your staff to deliver money management workshops in your community — helping people build confidence, shift behaviours, and create healthier relationships with money.
This is more than financial literacy. It’s about empowering people to break cycles of worry, reconnect with their goals, and take charge of their futures. When individuals feel financially secure, they are more likely to participate in their communities, show up at work with focus, and feel mentally well.
You don’t have to be a financial adviser or coach to make a difference. With the right support, anyone can help spark these important conversations.
How you can get involved
- Champion community well-being through your CSR strategy.
- Join our Train the Trainer programme and equip your staff to bring money confidence into schools, workplaces, and community spaces.
- Start conversations about money in ways that are non-judgemental and supportive.
- Recognise financial wellbeing as a core pillar of mental health and employee engagement.
Mental Health Awareness Week reminds us that community care is powerful. Let’s use this moment to come together — to create safer, stronger, more financially confident communities where everyone can thrive.
