Brexit: TISA develops pan-industry response plan

Now that the UK has voted to leave the EU attention in the financial services industry is being focused on the implications for firms and consumers and how best to help the governments Brexit negotiating team. TISA is responding to the challenge and our immediate priority is to work with our members to develop a pan-industry response.

Following discussions with the TISA Strategy Committee and the Policy Council Chairs we have decided to establish a Brexit Steering Committee to act as our main point of contact with government, HMT and the regulators. This committee will oversee the activity of dedicated working groups that we will also be setting up to focus on each key industry sector. This will be done in collaboration with the major trade bodies, legal organisations and City of London associations.

Our objective is to help government deliver a Brexit negotiating package that:
Secures UK financial services access to the EU market
Provides consumers with reassurance about their financial wellbeing
Safeguards access to the EU market for the growing UK FinTech industry
Preserves and where possible, improves the competitive position of the UK within Europe and the global financial services marketplace.

One of the first challenges we face is how best to work with the estimated 3,000 to 4,000 pieces of EU legislation that apply to financial services and to identify those that are necessary in order to maintain access, where potential blockages need to be removed and where there are gaps.

Over the coming weeks we will be drawing up precise terms of reference for the Steering Committee, working with the TISA Strategy Committee and the Chairs of our Policy Councils and holding meetings to gain consensus on the scope and objectives of the working groups. We will be seeking the further views of members as this programme of work develops through TISAs policy councils and technical committees and by the use of surveys and seminars.

Jeffrey Mushens, TISAs Technical Director will be leading our Brexit work. We will update you as this progresses but in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Jeffrey if you would like to discuss any aspect of this activity.
